The Philippines has one of the world's largest second-chance education programs, popularly known as the Alternative Learning System or ALS. This program encourages out-of-school children, youth, and adult learners to continue learning on an equivalent and flexible pathway to complete their education. Through this, it will help them to achieve their goals and improve the quality of their life.
Some indigent residents of Nagcarlan didn't have the chance to finish their elementary level. Some didn't know how to read and write, including some senior citizens. Due to poverty, they have to work early during their childhood or teenage years and neglect the importance of education. During the pandemic, ALS adapted the Modular Distance Learning method to prevent and mitigate the spread of Covid-19 and to protect the teachers, parents, and students' welfare.
After almost two years of staying at home, face-to-face classes are already allowed. Last July 5, 2022, Bangko Kabayan Nagcarlan branch conducted Bayani ng Komunidad Project through the help of Bangko Kabayan Foundation, Inc. by providing school supplies for ALS students at ALS Crisanto Guysayko Memorial Elementary School in Nagcarlan, Laguna.ALS graduates on technical courses also give back to BKFI by helping in trash segregation and donating their recyclables to Nagcarlan branch to be part of the XTrash Challenge for the environment.
