Filipinos are renowned for their remarkable qualities, especially being helpful. Community pantries which are similar to ‘Bayanihan’ have been emerging all over the country at the time that people lost their jobs and commodities began to have higher prices due to the pandemic. Bangko Kabayan adapted the community pantry’s project to show compassion, to give help, and to relieve the suffering of others.

Here are some BK branches that conducted community pantry projects:

1. “Pahatid na Munting Tulong” para sa Huwarang Ama ng Lansangan
Jeepney Drivers (Gumaca to Catanauan, Quezon) / Catanauan/Gumaca Jeepney Association (CGJA)

The main reason why most of the drivers, particularly the group that routes from Gumaca to Catanauan, Quezon decided to stop temporarily landing is due to the pandemic. Their income was not enough for their boundaries and fuel. They wanted to find an alternative source of income, but the lack of opportunities in the area adds a burden to the current situation, and this has caused the starvation of their families.

With this situation, BKFI conveyed a little help to make them feel sympathy and to encourage them to continue fighting. Inspired by the community pantry, the Gumaca branch asked the local town who are willing to help or contribute in providing 40 jeepney drivers with vegetables/ groceries/ or any items for their needs. Employees also contributed voluntarily to share their blessings with others.

2. Pagsanjan Branch Community Pantry

Unemployment or having no source of income during the pandemic has made it more difficult for PWDs and senior citizens to earn. Some of them who had previously worked temporarily stopped, while some eventually lost their permanent jobs. Although some of them have an income from their spouses or loved ones, it still wouldn't be enough to meet their basic needs for their children or family.

In collaboration with the Bangko Kabayan Foundation, Inc. (BKFI), employees of the BK-Pagsanjan branch and its clients showed their unity to serve those people in need by their ability to help and share in this time of the pandemic. All beneficiaries, specifically single mothers and senior citizens, returned home happy and with heartfelt gratitude for the blessings they have received.

3. Bayani ng Komunidad Project: Sariaya Community Pantry

This project aims to provide simple donations for selected senior citizens in Sariaya.

Most of the senior citizens in the town of Sariaya are experiencing poverty. Their age and health are compromised by the continuous spread of the COVID-19 in the country. Some are trying to make a living despite their condition, but due to the pandemic, they are not allowed to go out. Others might receive support from their family, but unfortunately, they have also lost their jobs. Senior citizens are the ones who desperately need help not only financially but also for their daily basic needs.

Bangko Kabayan Foundation Inc. provided some help through Sariaya branch. Clients, friends, and the community also came to help those who are in need during this time of the pandemic.

This pandemic had a great impact on everyone’s life, however, Bangko Kabayan saw this as an opportunity to extend a helping hand. Bringing a smile on their faces and giving hope is one great fulfillment as it always feels good to do good.
